Umrah for First-Time Pilgrims

Performing Umrahis one of the most spiritual and life-changing experiences for any Muslim. It’s a journey of faith, humility, and devotion — and for first-time pilgrims, it can also feel a bit overwhelming. From packing your Ihram to performing the Tawaf, there are many small details that matter.

If you’re preparing for your first Umrah from Pakistan, this simple step-by-step Umrah guide for beginners will walk you through everything you need to know — from preparation to the final prayer at Masjid al-Haram.

1. Understanding What Umrah Really Is

Before diving into the steps, let’s understand the essence of Umrah.

Umrah, often called the “lesser pilgrimage”, is an act of worship that can be performed at any time of the year — unlike Hajj, which has specific dates. The purpose of Umrah is to seek forgiveness, spiritual renewal, and closeness to Allah.

Although Umrah is not obligatory, performing it holds great reward and spiritual significance. Every Muslim who visits the holy land should try to experience this beautiful journey at least once in their lifetime.

2. Preparing for Umrah from Pakistan

Preparation is key to a peaceful and spiritually fulfilling experience. Here’s what you should focus on before your trip:

a. Documentation & Visa:
Apply for an Umrah visa through an authorized travel agency such as TripPlannerPK. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months.

b. Vaccinations & Health:
Saudi authorities require certain vaccinations (like meningitis). Carry your vaccination certificate with you.

c. Packing the Essentials:

  • Ihram (for men: two white unstitched sheets; for women: modest dress)
  • Comfortable sandals
  • Prayer mat, water bottle, toiletries (unscented), and small backpack
  • Basic medicines and travel-sized hygiene items

d. Spiritual Preparation:
Before leaving, seek forgiveness, settle debts, and make sincere niyyah (intention) for Umrah.

3. Step-by-Step Umrah Procedure

Now let’s go through the Umrah steps in the correct order:

Step 1: Ihram (State of Purity)

Before entering the Miqat (the boundary around Makkah), pilgrims must wear the Ihram and make their intention (niyyah) for Umrah.
Recite:

“Labbayk Allahumma Umrah”
This means, “O Allah, here I am to perform Umrah.”

While in Ihram, pilgrims must avoid cutting hair/nails, using perfume, and engaging in arguments or sinful acts.

Step 2: Talbiyah

After making the intention, start reciting the Talbiyah continuously until you reach Masjid al-Haram:

“Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka La Shareeka Laka Labbayk…”

It signifies your complete submission to Allah.

Step 3: Tawaf (Circling the Kaaba)Once you enter Masjid al-Haram, begin your Tawaf — walking seven times counterclockwise around the Kaaba, starting from the Black Stone (Hajr-e-Aswad).

  • Men should perform Ramal (brisk walking) during the first three rounds.
  • After completing Tawaf, pray two rakats near Maqam Ibrahim if possible.

Step 4: Sa’i (Between Safa and Marwah)

Next, head to the Safa and Marwah hills to perform Sa’i — walking seven times between them, beginning at Safa and ending at Marwah.
This act commemorates the struggle of Hazrat Hajra (AS) in search of water for her son, Prophet Ismail (AS).

Step 5: Halq or Taqsir (Shaving or Trimming Hair)

After completing Sa’i, men either shave (Halq) or trim (Taqsir) their hair, while women cut a small portion (around an inch) from the end of their hair.
This marks the completion of your Umrah.

4. Important Sunnahs During Umrah

To make your Umrah more meaningful, try to follow these Sunnahs:

  • Enter Masjid al-Haram with your right foot and recite the dua for entering a mosque.
  • Keep reciting Talbiyah, Duas, and Durood throughout the journey.
  • Drink Zamzam water and make sincere prayers for yourself and others.
  • Perform Tawaf al-Nafl (optional extra Tawaf) if time allows.

These small acts add immense spiritual value to your Umrah experience.

5. Tips for First-Time Pilgrims

If it’s your first time performing Umrah, here are some practical tips that can make your journey smoother:

  • Stay hydrated: The weather can be hot, especially if you’re traveling from Pakistan.
  • Stay patient: Crowds can be large; patience and calmness are part of your worship.
  • Keep your Ihram clean: Avoid scented products and handle your attire with respect.
  • Use technology wisely: Mobile apps can help you navigate rituals, dua collections, and directions.
  • Plan rest periods: Don’t overexert yourself — Umrah is spiritual, not a physical race.

 6. Returning Home with Gratitude

Once your Umrah is complete and you return home, maintain the spiritual momentum. Continue your prayers, charity, and good deeds. Many pilgrims describe Umrah as the moment that “changes their heart forever” — so let that feeling guide you forward in your daily life.
